Engine-Out Cambelt Service on a Ferrari F355
During the spring, our workshops completed an engine-out cambelt service on the iconic and rare RHD Ferrari F355. Produced between 1994 and 1999, the F355 is often regarded as one of the last truly analogue Ferraris before the introduction of extensive electronic driver aids. The Ferrari F355 is powered by a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre V8 engine producing around 375bhp and is considered by many enthusiasts to be one of Ferrari’s most beautiful modern designs.
Their value has increased significantly in recent years and is highly desirable amongst enthusiasts. Owners are increasingly investing in preventative maintenance to protect their supercars. Therefore, a comprehensive service history is particularly important on the F355s due to the complexity and cost of major maintenance, which is something we provide at our workshops. This major service involved removing the entire rear drivetrain assembly to access the engine. With the engine and gearbox out of the vehicle, the project also provided an opportunity to carry out detailed cleaning, component inspection and preventative maintenance before the Ferrari was carefully reassembled and returned to the road.
A cambelt service is vital for the Ferrari F355. This is because the cambelts synchronise the crankshaft and camshafts, and they ensure valves and pistons operate at precisely the correct time. If a belt fails, the engine can suffer catastrophic internal damage. The belts deteriorate with age; therefore, even vehicles with low mileage require replacement at regular intervals.
Unlike many vehicles, where timing belts can be accessed from the front of the engine, the F355’s compact mid-engine layout leaves very limited access. Removing the engine, gearbox and rear suspension assembly together by lowering the subframe allows our technicians unrestricted access to the belts and surrounding components.
Additionally, once the rear subframe, engine and gearbox assembly had been removed from the vehicle, our technicians were also able to inspect the surrounding components and systems. Areas that would typically be difficult to access with the drivetrain installed could now be thoroughly examined, allowing potential issues to be identified before they develop into more significant problems. During the cambelt service, it’s beneficial to check the condition of the coolant hoses and connections, fuel lines and fittings, electrical wiring and connectors and signs of oil or coolant leaks. In addition to the engine and gearbox mounts, ancillary brackets and fasteners, and the general condition of the engine bay. This preventative maintenance allows ageing parts to be replaced during planned workshop visits, helping to improve long-term reliability whilst avoiding more extensive repairs in the future and preventing additional costs.
As the F355 is about 30 years old, many of its original sensors and electrical components have been subjected to decades of heat cycles and vibration. Over time, these components can become less reliable and can potentially lead to inconsistent engine performance, intermittent warning lights, starting issues, poor running characteristics and difficult fault diagnosis. Whilst the engine was removed, we replaced several ageing sensors and service items whilst access was at its best. This helped to reduce the likelihood of future failures and avoid repeating significant labour costs later.
As a final part of the service, the Ferrari's service book was stamped to formally record the work carried out. Maintaining a comprehensive and trusted service history is an important part of caring for a classic car, providing a lasting record of the specialist attention and high standard of workmanship it has received.
In addition to the cam belt service, our client opted to have the engine bay dry ice blasted whilst it’s removed from the vehicle. The process removes oil residue, grime, dirt build-up, and contaminants accumulated over years of use, leaving components cleaner and easier to inspect. Additionally, it makes it easier to identify leaks, inspect castings and housings, and assess the condition of wiring and pipework during the assembly. Along with making it easier to monitor any future maintenance requirements and improves the overall preservation of the Ferrari.
