Porsche vs McLaren – Driving Experience Comparison
Recently, we’ve had the pleasure of working on a Porsche 911.1 Carrera GTS and a 2017 McLaren 675LT in our workshops. In the world of high-performance motoring, there are many interpretations of what a sports car should be, but few comparisons highlight this better than the Porsche 991.1 Carrera GTS and the McLaren 675LT. While both deliver exceptional speed, engineering, and driver engagement, they approach performance from completely different perspectives. At Speedshop44, both vehicles presented unique workshop requirements, from the precision involved in a centre-lock wheel and tyre conversion on the Porsche to the detailed post-purchase inspection and preservation work carried out on the McLaren. This article offers a comparison of the driving experiences of these two high-performance cars.
The Porsche 911.1 Carrera GTS is promoted as an everyday high-performance sports car. Housing a 3.8L flat-six engine, offering 430-444 brake horsepower. With a rear-engine and a rear-wheel drive layout, this Porsche goes from 0-60 mph in 3.7-4.0 seconds and reaches a top speed of 190+ mph. The Porsche 911.1 Carrera GTS is considered the “sweet spot” of the 911 range, which is more focused on performance and driver engagement rather than comfort and less extreme than a GT3.
In comparison, the McLaren 675LT was marketed as a track-focused supercar with road legality. At the heart of this supercar is a 3.8L twin-turbo V8 engine, with 675bhp. The McLaren 675LT has a mid-engine layout and rear-wheel drive, going from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 205 mph. This McLaren has a lightweight carbon fibre construction, hydraulic steering, and race-derived chassis tech, designed for maximum driver engagement and track performance.
At Speedshop44, both vehicles required specialist attention and have unique challenges. The Porsche Carrera GTS came into the workshop for a swap of winter tyres to summer tyres. This job requires more technical consideration than most wheel changes, because of the centre-lock wheel system, which requires very high torque settings for tightening/loosening the single large nut. The process involves safely removing the centre-lock wheels and inspecting the hub and locking mechanism. Along with re-fitting summer tyres with precise torque calibration and resetting the tyre pressures and TPMS.
Additionally, the McLaren 675LT came into our workshops for a post-purchase inspection and detailing. Some key areas we examined during the inspection include checking the carbon fibre body and structural checks, the suspension system, brake system, engine health and turbo system, in addition to the electronics and driving modes. Unlike the Porsche, this is less about routine maintenance and more about high-value inspection and preservation of a specialist supercar.
On the road, the Porsche is balanced and predictable, with strong steering feedback, comfortable enough for daily use and encourages confidence at all speeds. For the driver, it provides progressive power delivery, stable rear-engine traction with an engaging but not intimidating feel. On the other hand, the McLaren is extremely fast and aggressive. The highly communicative hydraulic steering and race-derived suspension with incredible body control make it feel reactive at all times. Behind the wheel, the McLaren 675LT has lightning-fast gear shifts and immediate throttle response despite turbocharging, requiring skill and attention.
Overall, the Porsche 991.1 GTS represents refined usability, where engineering enhances everyday driving without overwhelming the driver. Whilst the Porsche is more approachable and confidence-inspiring than the McLaren, making it a great daily sports car. Whereas the McLaren 675LT is ferocious, intense, demanding, but rewarding. With a strong focus on performance, designed for the track and special occasions. If you are interested in booking any of our services, please don’t hesitate to get in contact.
